«No podemos condenar a toda una generación por el miedo de algunos y la irresponsabilidad de otros»: Hernando Parra Nieto

El rector de la Universidad Externado de Colombia, Hernando Parra Nieto, dio la bienvenida a los estudiantes de primer semestre al inicio de clases de este período académico bajo la modalidad de asistencia presencial, total y permanente a la Universidad.

Frente a lo que denominó como un inicio exitoso de clases, debido a la masiva asistencia de estudiantes al campus y la acogida de la convocatoria a la presencialidad, el rector afirmó que regresar a las aulas es un acto de responsabilidad con el progreso y el desarrollo del país, pero sobre todo con la formación y el futuro de toda una generación a la que le tocó vivir la realidad de la pandemia.

«He venido insistiendo, y seguiré insistiendo siempre, en que la presencialidad es un factor fundamental para la educación; negarla y entregarnos de lleno a la virtualidad es negarles a nuestros estudiantes la posibilidad de acceder a cientos de recursos y a espacios de diálogo que aportan de manera irreemplazable a la formación de conocimiento. La presencialidad brinda espacios y herramientas que ellos de manera remota nunca podrán alcanzar, además de ser un elemento indispensable en la garantía de su salud mental y el derecho al bienestar y el sano esparcimiento.»

En este sentido el rector puntualizó que entiende y respeta a quienes temen aún a la presencialidad, pero los llamó a revisar las garantías que ha brindado para la salud pública el avance en el Plan Nacional de Vacunación, así como las medidas que se vienen tomando desde diferentes sectores. «No podemos condenar a toda una generación por el miedo de algunos y la irresponsabilidad de otros. Encerrar a nuestros jóvenes en su casa no es la respuesta; dejar que las fiestas, los carnavales y otros espacios sean su único espacio de encuentro tampoco es sano. Aquí tenemos que poner todos de nuestra parte, el autocuidado, la vacunación masiva y sobre todo las alertas frente a los contagios individuales reducen enormemente el riesgo y son el camino que debemos tomar, es la forma de vencer al virus y afrontar esta batalla que nos ha tocado vivir.»

Por su parte Sonia Novoa Vargas, Directora Administrativa del Externado dio un parte de tranquilidad respecto a los esfuerzos y la preparación de la Universidad para este regreso total y permanente a la presencialidad, afirmando que todos y cada uno de los profesores y estudiantes, pero sobre todo los directivos y funcionarios de la Universidad, han hecho su máximo esfuerzo y han demostrado todo su compromiso para que este retorno se dé en condiciones de seguridad para todos.

«Estamos alentando sí, el regreso total a la presencialidad, pero también respetando el distanciamiento social, exigiendo a través de nuestro aplicativo el reporte del estado de salud de todo aquel que asista a la universidad, garantizando en cuanto a infraestructura espacios con adecuada ventilación y los elementos necesarios para el lavado permanente de manos. Adicionalmente hemos hecho y seguiremos haciendo permanentes campañas para reforzar el autocuidado y la responsabilidad y capacitando a nuestros funcionarios en cómo protegerse ellos y cómo proteger a los demás. Estamos haciendo todo para reducir al máximo el riesgo y garantizar la salud de nuestra comunidad.» puntualizó la funcionaria.

‘’We can’t condemn an entire generation because of the fear and irresponsibility of others’’ Hernando Parra Nieto

In line with his declarations the previous week, the rector of the Externado University, Hernando Parra Nieto, this Monday, January 17th, welcomed first semester students for the start of classes under the guidelines for in-person classes at the university.

Regarding what he called a successful start to the semester, because of the massive attendance of students on campus, and the eager response to the call to on-site classes, the rector affirmed that the return to classrooms is an act of responsibility with the progress and development of the country, and especially with the formation and the future of a whole generation that has had to live through the reality of the pandemic.

Ñ’I’ve been insisting, I insist today and I will continue insisting, that on-site classes are a fundamental factor for education. Denying this, and submitting ourselves fully to virtual classes, is to deny our students the possibility of accessing hundreds of resources and spaces for dialogue that contribute in an irreplaceable way to the advancement of knowledge. On-site classes permit spaces and tools that remote learning can never accomplish, as well as being an indispensable element for guaranteeing mental health and wellbeing and healthy entertainment».

In this sense the rector pointed out that he understands and respects those who fear the return to on-site classes, but he asked them to review the public health guarantees regarding the advances in the National Vaccination Plan, as well as the measures that have been taken in different sectors. ‘’We can’t condemn an entire generation because of the fear and irresponsibility of others. Confining our youth to their homes is not the answer; allowing parties, carnivals and other spaces to be the only meeting places is not healthy either. We all have to do our part: self-care, a massive vaccination program and above all, to be alert in the face of individual infections. This will reduce enormously the risk, and the measures are the path we must take. This is the way to overcome the virus and confront the battle that we are currently living».

For her part, Sonia Novoa Vargas, the Administrative Director of the Externado mentioned the calm and ease with respect to the efforts and the preparation on the part of the University for the return to on-site classes. She affirmed that each and every one of the professors and students, and particularly all the governing body and the administrative staff, have made a maximum effort and have demonstrated total commitment so that the return to classes would be under the safest conditions for everyone.

‘’We are encouraging the return to on-site classes, but also respect for social distancing and the use of our app to report the health status of everyone who comes to the university. We guarantee that the infrastructure is properly ventilated and that all the necessary elements for hand-washing are in place. Additionally, we have had, and we will continue to have, permanent campaigns to reinforce the idea of self-care and responsibility. Our staff are trained in how to protect themselves and how to protect others. We are doing everything to reduce to the maximum the risk, and guarantee the health of our community’’, the Administrative Director pointed out.
