From its 19th century origins in England to the multi-billion-dollar industry it is today, football and politics have always interacted. This course will look at episodes in which the two have come together throughout history.

This covers such topics as:

  • The working-class origins of the sport in England
  • Its spread across the world through the British Empire
  • The formation of FIFA
  • Joao Havelange and the expansion of the World Cup
  • Football Hooliganism
  • The post-1992 revolution(s)
  • FIFA and corruption
  • Sportswashing
  • The European Super League
