Gabriel Rojas, docente de Comunicación Social – Periodismo, gana beca del XVII Salón Regional de Artistas

El trabajo del profesor y fotógrafo profesional fue elegido como ganador de la iniciativa, organizada por el Ministerio de Cultura, en la que participaron 120 proyectos.

El externadista obtuvo este reconocimiento por su trabajo titulado “Guardián de Historia”, un foto-libro dedicado al barrio Egipto y su resurgimiento por medio de la iniciativa Breaking Bordes, un proyecto turístico de la zona que busca dar a conocer sus calles y las historias de renovación comunitaria a los visitantes y turistas nacionales y extranjeros.

“Este trabajo nace del interés por conocer y fotografiar comunidades, evidenciar realidades y procesos de transformación, en este caso de un barrio muy cerca del centro pero que se siente alejado por las condiciones socioeconómicas, así como por la violencia y el estigma que ha vivido. Me llama la atención la iniciativa Breaking Borders, que significa romper barreras, por medio del turismo comunitario”, asegura Rojas, quien ha visitado el barrio desde el 2018 con el interés de acompañar el proceso y la iniciativa, además de llevar estudiantes a vivir y apoyar la experiencia Breaking Borders.

Sobre la importancia de este premio para su carrera, el docente afirma que ha optado por temas “que no tienen que ver con lo que es noticia o lo que está de moda, eso es bueno porque no tienes a alguien diciendo qué hacer, ni tienes un plazo, lo malo es que es difícil ponerlos en circulación o exponerlos, en ese sentido el reconocimiento del XVII Salón Regional de Artistas, donde participé por la región centro (Bogotá y Cundinamarca), llega en forma de estímulo para poner este trabajo en circulación y llegar a más público. Me llena de alegría porque en el 2017 también gané (en ese momento beca) en los XVI salones regionales de artistas por el Meta con un trabajo de largo aliento, y ambos trabajos tienen en común la noción de memoria y de tradición”.

Gabriel Rojas es fotógrafo, diseñador gráfico y docente de la asignatura Fotografía del área de Lenguajes y Producción en la Facultad de Comunicación Social – Periodismo del Externado. Ha sido premiado por la World of Photography – WOOPHY con el trabajo ‘¿Qué es noticia para ti?’; obtuvo el primer puesto en Reportería Gráfica del IDPC con ‘Un día en la vida del patrimonio cultural de Bogotá’; y fue ganador de la beca para proyectos editoriales independientes en el 45 Salón Nacional de Artistas.

Gabriel Rojas, Social Communication – Journalism professor, obtains XVII Regional Salon of Artists grant

The professor and professional photographer’s work was selected as the winner of the initiative, organized by the Ministry of Culture, in which 120 projects participated.

The Externadista obtained this recognition for his work “Guardián de Historia” (Guardian of History), a photo-book dedicated to the Egypt neighborhood and its resurgence through the Breaking Borders initiative, a tourist project in the area seeking to promote its streets and community renewal stories to national and foreign visitors and tourists.

“This work is born from the interest in learning and photographing communities, showing realities and transformation processes. In this case, a neighborhood very close to the city center but feeling isolated due to socioeconomic conditions and the violence and stigma it has experienced.  I am impressed by the Breaking Borders initiative, which means breaking barriers through community tourism,” says Rojas, who has visited the district since 2018 aiming to accompany the process and initiative and also, bringing students to live and support the Breaking Borders experience.

On the significance of this award for his career, the professor states he has opted for topics “that have nothing to do with what is in the news or what is fashionable. This is good because you do not have someone telling you what to do, nor do you have a deadline; the bad thing is that it is difficult to put them into circulation or exhibit them. In that sense, the recognition of the XVII Regional Salon of Artists, where I participated in the central region (Bogotá and Cundinamarca), is an incentive to put this work into circulation and reach more audiences. It fills me with joy because, in 2017, I also won (at that time a scholarship) in the XVI regional artists’ salons for Meta with a long-term work, and both works have in common the notion of memory and tradition.”

Gabriel Rojas is a photographer, graphic designer, and professor of the Photography course in the Language and Production area of the Externado School of Social Communication – Journalism. He was awarded by the World of Photography - WOOPHY for the work ‘What is news for you? He also obtained first place in IDPC’s Graphic Reporting for “A day in the life of the cultural heritage of Bogotá´ and the winner of the scholarship for independent publishing projects at the 45th National Salon of Artists.
